What could I do if my bf has an anxiety attack? He hasn't had any issues since I met him (four months now), in the past he has endured a lot due to anxiousness, and he still takes medicine for that. presently nowadays (grad school, new house, etc...) and even though I believe he'll be fine, he might get anxious, or have an anxiety attack. What should I do?

Opate type drugs mask depression symptoms, you probably didn't feel drugged because since you are depressed, you don't feel anything correctly.

Try Lexapro, it worked wonders for me.
References :
Yep...I know exactly what you mean....the best relief I ever felt from my resistant depression was when I was on RX painkillers. Ity's a shame cos I've been on nearly 40 standard drug trials and nothing works for me...from A - Zoloft....I'm trying the Omeg-3 fish oil with nuerobiofeedback. It seems to help but the jury is still out...Lamictil is a good mood stabilizer if you are bi-polar....I can't find an anti-depressant that does not make me worse...

I started taking Paxil in 1997, I was upto 50mg/day the highest dosage. All through those years I have had problems, with money, relationships(with husband/parents) and accepting responsibility. Finally about three weeks ago after all those years of suffering I decided to slowly wean myself off of Paxil, I am at 20mg/day and in two weeks I will be completely done. My point is that from the time I was 19, I was looking for something to cure me, and the reality was that I need to accept responsibility and grow up. I have never been more focused than I am right now. I have been in a "fog" for the past 9 years. I think it's time I stopped suffering through life and started living it, maybe you should too.
References :
Webmd.com symptoms of depression/bi-polar disorder

I have identical mirror twin sons, one of which is bipolar and one is not. First off I would agree with others that "could" is still questionable as to what her diagnosis is. Also, I applaude you for checking the credentials of the dr. she is going to. A good, reputable dr. is a must! I think the website listed above did have some good information, but I think perhaps you need more information from your sister as well -- what exactly are the symptoms they are using to diagnose her?

Lastly, someone please take the tv remote away from Lotus -- he's obviously seen too many bad movies on tv. Bipolar individuals do not routinely do those sorts of things. Get a grip and quit making ridiculous accusations about a subject you obviously know nothing about. It's people like you making wild statements that perpetuate the misunderstanding of mental illnesses. And they are illnesses, largely biologically based, so read up before you spout off please.

Good luck to you,
References :
Don't get any diagnosis from an unlicensed doctor on the Internet! That's bullshit. Many people use the word "bipolar" now to refer to all sorts of emotional problems. The bipolar disorder is also called manic depression. Manic depressives can do crazy stuff like trash a house, run naked in the streets, or spend all their money on useless things. Is that what your sister does?
References :
Unfortunately, your symptoms were not erased by Vicodin, merely masked by the euphoria you feel while taking it.

Vicodin is an extremely powerful narcotic for severe pain. It is highly addictive(think crystal meth); there have been a number of cases of Vicodin related deaths, as well as a number of suicides when patients were going through withdrawal.
Your "feeling like crap" is merely your body withdrawing from the drug, nothing else.
Have you been concretely diagnosed with a mental illness? Certain medications work better for certain illnesses. Perhaps seeking the advice of a mental health professional will be able to come up with a good action plan and course of treatment.

Good Luck to you.
References :
Pharmacy Technician- 6 years dispensing...

Your symptoms sound more like those of addiction than of depression. Have you used drugs in the past? If the only thing that makes you at easy is a narcotic and you experience withdrawal when you stop then I suggest you see your doctor about detoxification. Needing a narcotic to feel "normal" is not healthy. As for there being a drug to treat your symptoms ... yes there is, it's called methadone.
References :
This is well explained at http://www.bipolar-lives.com/manic-depression-causes.html

There is strong evidence that genetics does not fully explain what causes bipolar that comes from studies of identical twins. As you will know, identical twins have the same genes. Yet in only 57% of cases of bipolar in an identical twin, does the other twin also turn out to have the disorder. If genetics were destiny, and if bipolar disorder was a purely genetic disease, then in 100% of cases, both identical twins would develop bipolar disorder.

However, there is definitely a genetic component, with some families showing much higher occurrences of bipolar disorder. An individual with a close relative such as a parent or sibling who is manic depressive is far more likely to also develop symptoms. Remember - this is not inevitable and not all family members will develop bipolar disorder, even in families where the overall incidence is very high.

Family history is very important though, and should always be examined when trying to make a diagnosis. There is a 2% chance that an individual may have bipolar disorder - this rises to 10% with one bipolar parent, and 40% with two bipolar parents.

It sounds like both you and your twin should see a competent medical expert who is properly familiar with all the nuances of bipolar disorder. The website I have referenced also has a free online bipolar test - this is a professional test that is teh same as apsychiatrist would administer. You could both take this and use the results as a basis for more research and discussions with doctors. Good luck. This is a very treatable condition and you and your twin just need the information so you can make a treatment plan if necessary.
References :
http://www.bipolar-lives.com/manic-depression-causes.html
